Carpenter mentions how she tries to understand a book as well as she can before starting the translation, she specifically mentions how in murder mysteries, the translator would need to read through first and know the killer before translating. Do you agree with this? Some other translators have said that they try to capture the feeling of reading something for the first time so they read while translating. How do you go about translating the homework? Could it be a genre-specific technique?
Carpenter mentions how she has translated books and TV shows, what do you think would be the differences between translating books and media? Would you also add different tones to different characters? Would there be a difference between translating subtitles and translating dubbed versions of media?
What did you think about Author Binard translating his own work and taking a lot of creative leeway with it? Do you think this means that translators should exercise more freedom when translating works?
